All our surfskis are prepared for getting started as easy as possible. What you need to do is to adjust the footplate so it fits your length. You are adjusting the footplate by pulling the rope just behind the plate. Standard recommendation for length is when you can push one leg down and rotate a little with your hips so the back of your knee touches the “hump”. This should not be possible when pushing two legs. From here you can adjust one ”klick” back or forth to find optimal length for you.
Steering ropes is self-adjusted. Meaning if you adjust the length of the footplate, you don’t need to adjust the ropes, just make sure the ropes glides through the holes in the pedals. If you like to adjust the angel of the pedals you do that by either shortening the ropes or adding some more length. You adjust the length behind the footplate by screwing the rope locker mechanism. If you are doing ocean paddling we recommend you to have the pedals almost straight up (towards you) to have maximum steering potential. If you are doing most flat water paddling you can have the pedals more forward, about straight with the plate.
Now you are ready to go!
The self bailer is positioned between your legs, as much back in the cockpit as possible and at lowest point. NOTE, it is very important that you don’t get sand in the bailer! If leaving the boat on the beach make sure you have closed the bailer before putting it down. If the bailer doesn’t operate smoothly it is likely you have some sand in it that you need to wash out with fresh water.
If you are paddling in salt water you need to wash your kayak with fresh water after every paddle!
Keep the kayak out of direct sunlight to best preserve your surfski, over a period of time paint pigment can fade due to the UV light.
Store the boat in proper cradles. Make sure to not store the boat on to small pressure points, it can deform the shape of the boat, we recommend you minimum 10 cm support with some foam at two points.
If you cover the kayak with a tarp or similar(kayak cover), note that trapping moisture between the cover and the kayak surface may lead to small bubbles and blisters in the paint surface. Only use a tarp for short periods, remove and dry both kayak and tarp if condensation builds up under the cover. Ideally, hang the tarp so to prevent it touching the kayak, this allows for good ventilation.
The best solution to storing your kayak is to keep it inside a garage or shed. This generally reduces moisture in and around the kayak, and shades it from UV light.
The minimum requirement to transporting your surfski by car is a padded roof rack and webbing straps. This is the least secure way of carrying the kayak as the kayak is prone to shifting due to side- winds, and bow and stern ties are advisable. The kayak is prone to get damaged when strapped to a bare roof rack as the load will be placed on two relatively small pressure points on the kayak, and this may cause cracking or even worse - damages of the construction.
A padded pair of upright bars bolted to the roofrack helps stabilizing the boat in side winds (though not necessarily from damage if it sits on to small pressure point). This may be lessened by resting the boat on its side.
The best transport solution is to place the kayak in hull shaped cradles. These cradles stop the boat from moving in side winds, and maximize the contact pressure point areas.
For cars with roof bars close together, it is sometimes better to transport the kayak upside down, just make sure you have proper support on the rack or cradle.
Pay extra attention when transporting Pro and Race constructions. Don’t tie too hard!
Paddling a performance surfski may be potentially dangerous if not used with caution. Always use a PFD and a leash to secure you to the craft (except for river paddling!). Never paddle alone on open waters. Make sure you are dressed for the water temperature and that you can perform a re-entry if falling out. Do not paddle in conditions you cannot handle. Check your craft (rudder and rudder lines, screws, accessories etc.) regularly, and before doing open water crossings. Be prepared by having a well thought out safety plan and always bring a water proof stored mobile phone in case of an accident.
Nordic Kayaks guarantee the original owner, who bought the product from Nordic kayaks or any authorized NK dealer, that all our products should be free from defects in construction or workmanship for two year from the date of purchase. If such damage should occur, NK will repair or replace the product free of charge. The original invoice is your proof of purchase.
If you returning your product in a warranty-repair matter by freight, buyer needs to pay for the freight to the local dealer or to Nordic Kayaks HQ in Sweden. When product is repaired Nordic Kayaks will arrange and pay for delivering the product back to buyer.
